Sometimes it is better to try to light an undesireable feature, rather than to try and avoid it. For example, converting a large space into an intimate dining area, rather than trying to let the ceiling disappear int a black hole, apply some contrasting color to it. Blue hues, perhaps broken up with random patterns, acknowledge where the top is, without competing for attention. The dining floor and tables would be lit with a warmer, more candlelight-colored look, which also tends to give them a more comfortable feel.
